Dear Roland owner,
Thanks for downloading Livewire Audio's sounds for the Roland D-10
and D-20 synthesizers. Livewire has programmed a variety of sounds, uploaded
this sound set, prepared this document, and extensively tested the sounds
with both synths, all at no charge. All we ask is that, if you like the sounds,
you send in payment for the full patch library.
If you are using an IBM-PC compatible computer, you MUST have a MIDI
interface that is compatible with the industry-standard Roland MPU-401 to
load these sounds. We have had much success with the MIDI Quest boards,
which are a heck of a lot cheaper than Roland's, and more compact to boot!
Most non-standard MIDI interfaces (such as the Key external) and some game
boards will not work. You may be able to use a Windows MIDI dumper program
(if your MIDI card provides a Windows driver) to load these sounds. However,
we cannot guarantee these sounds will load unless you use a genuine MPU-401
compatible MIDI card. Apple Macintosh and Atari ST users can use any normal
MIDI interface to load these sounds.
The enclosed file contains 64 new "tones" for your synth. If you like
the sounds, send in a check or money order for $10, and you will receive
the full two patch sets (a total of 128 sounds), plus a copy of the
original factory sounds, the latest version of a patch loader program, and a
complete hardcopy list of the sounds. Not a bad deal for a mere $10!
These sound patches may be freely uploaded onto any public or private
BBS, as long as this text file accompanies the sound set. These sound patches
are copyright 1994 by Mick Seeley for Livewire Audio. All rights are reserved.
REQUIRED PROGRAMS TO LOAD OUR SOUNDS
To load the enclosed sounds, you must use the appropriate program. For
the IBM, MIDIEX is the usual loader program. For the few synths that won't take
to MIDIEX, we use QS.EXE. Since the Roland D-series synth's are pretty quirky
(to say the least), we have included both programs - if one doesn't work, try
the other. Windows users can give WSYSEX.EXE a shot as well. Mac users should
use MIDIEX-MAC. Atari ST users have a choice of either MIDISAVE.TOS, or the
Mini-Dumpstor desk accessory. All of these programs are included FREE on our
shareware disk, when you send in your payment.
PREPARING FOR MIDI DATA TRANSFER
To load your patches, first make sure you have saved your internal memory.
Your internal memory will be erased by loading in our sounds. Switch the
write-protect to off, and enable MIDI SYSEX if necessary. Make sure you have
a cable going from MIDI out of the computer to MIDI in on the synth, and a
cable going from MIDI out of the synth to MIDI in on the computer. Make sure
your synth's base channel is set for MIDI channel 1.
LOADING WITH THE ATARI ST
Double-click your left mouse button on MIDISAVE.TOS. This simple program
will run, and a help screen will appear. This screen explains how to operate
all the functions of MIDISAVE. To load, type: LOAD LW_D10_A.STM, and press
return. The file will load into your synth. See the on-screen instructions
for MIDISAVE.TOS to save your sounds.
LOADING WITH THE IBM PC
Type MIDIEX and press ENTER. MIDIEX is a simple MIDI patch librarian.
After loading it will give you a choice of either T (transmit), R (receive),
or F (to list files) or escape to quit. Type T and then enter the name of the
bank you want to load (LW_D10_A.STM), and press ENTER. Our sounds will load
into PC memory. Now press any key on your PC's keyboard to send the soundbank
to your synth. Read the MIDIEX text file with any standard word processor, for
info on how to save your sounds to disk.
If MIDIEX doesn't work with your synth, try QS.EXE, also included in this
package. Windows users may want to try "WSYSEX.EXE" (also included) to load
our sounds. This public domain Windows program has not been tested by us, and
is not guaranteed to load our sounds.
LOADING WITH THE APPLE MACINTOSH
Double-click the mouse on the MIDIEX_Mac file. Click the mouse to clear
the screen, and an empty MIDIEX window will appear. Click once on the top
"empty" bank to select it (the bank will now be dark, meaning you have selected
it). Move the mouse pointer up to the "Files" menu, or select "send dump" from
the MIDIEX pull-down menu, and the file will load into your synth. See the
Teachtext file on disk for more complete information on MIDIEX-MAC.
TIPS
If you still own a Roland D-10 or D-20, the best tip we can give you is
sell that sucker while you still can get something for it. Today's synth's
simply blow your poor old Roland out of the water, sonically speaking.
If you can't afford to upgrade now, we can at least recommend a good
software for it. For mixing up and saving your own custom banks, we highly
recommend "Super Librarian" by Pixel Publishing. It's easy to use, inexpensive,
and fully compatible between IBM, Mac and Atari versions. "Super Librarian"
can be purchased direct from Pixel Publishing at (416) 785-3036.
TROUBLESHOOTING
Can't get your sounds to load correctly? We have tested all our sounds
extensively with the synth they were designed for. If your's didn't load
correctly, chances are you did something wrong. Go back to the setup section
and double-check everything. Make sure you're using good MIDI cables. If you
have purchased one of our sound banks, you can call us for free technical
support at (908) 222-1227. If you couldn't even send in a measly shareware
payment, yer on yer own, pal!
Enjoy your new sounds, and keep us in mind for any other sounds you may
need for any synth. And, hey, if you like the sounds, SEND IN THE SHAREWARE
PAYMENT, so we can keep on bringing you new synth sounds.
OBLIGATORY PLUG

no charge. All we ask is that you send in payment for some of our soundbanks.

Best of all, all these sounds are now available as shareware! These
soundbanks and patch libraries formerly sold from anywhere to $29.95 to
$139.95. Try them for free - they should be available on the same BBS that
you downloaded this file from. If not, contact us (by voice) at the number
below. If you like the soundbanks, you are obligated to send in payment.
Shareware payment runs from as little as $10 to no more than $20. Those who
send in payment get a disk with the latest version of MIDIEX, more sound files,
the original factory sounds for backup, great new shareware programs, and the
piece of mind that comes from knowing you compensated somebody for their hard
work. So check out our soundbanks - if you like' em, send in the shareware
payment. After all, anybody who can afford hundreds of dollars for a keyboard,
and hundreds more for a computer system, can surely afford $10-20 for the
sounds they're using!
Livewire also has low-priced, high-quality, PCM sample disks for the
Korg T1, T2, and T3, as well as for the Yamaha SY85 and SY99, Ensoniq EPS and
ASR, and Casio FZ samplers. Sorry, sample disks are not available as shareware.
Send a stamped, self-addressed envelope for a list of the sound disks available
for your sampler.
Here's hoping you enjoy our sounds. Please send in your shareware payment
of $10 to the address below. Make checks or money orders payable (in US dollars
please) to Livewire Audio.
